Turchon Tunnel
Bridgewater State University
August 2023 - July 2024

Samantha Cushman

I continue my work of showcasing native Massachusetts flora. I have previously explored this subject matter during my time at BSU as a student in my graduate thesis project and BSU bear sculpture project. I work in a black and white graphic style that is reflective of my background as a printmaker.

The bottom length of the tunnel will be covered in images of native flora creating a lush garden. Moving upward, a landscape will emerge including buildings from around campus. With the potential for hidden objects to be placed within the landscape like an iSpy, so that the mural becomes interactive with the viewer. The top of the tunnel will be a swirling night sky that is reminiscent of the sky in Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night, which has been an influential piece of artwork in my life.
